The Writing Sister's Summit

When I googled writing retreat for Black women…I had no idea that a writer’s retreat in Taos, New Mexico would pop up. In my 45 years so far, every time I take a flying leap, God sets out a road beneath my feet to keep me from falling. This was no exception.

I walked into an environment where I was met by a room full of Black women writers, dreamers, and creatives, ready to say, “Come on in and sit down at the table with us.”

In just a few days, I absorbed practical and useful information on how to become a better writer. Vanessa Riley, Sheila Williams, Wanda Morris, Pamela Samuels Young and Nina Foxx poured their knowledge into us. By the way, have you seen them?

Throughout the conference, I kept thinking…my wildest dreams are actually possible.  The generosity was unreal.  It was more than just advice.  It was, “Let me get to know you and meet you where you are." I felt like I had known some of the other attendees for years and learned so much from them as well. There were laughs, hugs, and a few tears.  Side note: I learned how to play mahjong, and it is definitely my new thing.

I can’t wait to make it to the next one.
